Holiday Foods
Well it’s that time of year again. The Holiday Season is upon us, a time to enjoy the company of family and friends….and food; at least that’s the way it seems. According to the National Institutes of Health the average American gains 1-2 pounds over the Holiday season. This may not seem like much, but can really add up over several years. We have all heard lots of tips on avoiding weight gain throughout the Holiday season. There are so many suggestions out there it can seem a bit overwhelming; which are the best to try and follow? To help decrease this already stressful time of the year, I’ve put together the top three healthy Holiday tips (in my opinion), that should be easy enough for any of us to stick to!

  1.  Be realistic. Don’t try and lose weight during this season, instead simply aim for maintaining your current weight- it’ll set you up for less disappointment!
  2. Bring your own healthy, lower calorie dish to a carry-in to insure you have something that will fit in with your meal plan and allow you slightly larger portions.
  3. Finally, maintain or increase your exercise regimen (this will help with the added Holiday stress too). A few extra 15 minute walks per day will help offset the added calories you take in and keep you at that goal of weight maintenance.

There are tons of other suggestions out there for healthy Holiday planning, but again, these are the easiest to follow in my opinion. Curious as to what other tips there are? You are always welcome to contact the Dietitian’s office at HRH; 248-5370 or email one of us at anna.thomas@hrhonline.org, megan.linden@hrhonline.org. What are some of your favorite healthy Holiday tips you use to get through the season?

Engage in conversation with your company, away from the dinner table. This will enable you to take the focus off the delicious spread that sets before you and sitting at the table is tempting and hard to resist. Conversation is calorie-free and spending time with others is really what the holidays are all about!
