Hannibal Regional Infusion Center Team Guides Hannibal Resident to Better Bookmark

A trip to the emergency room for a gallbladder attack ended with a surprising outcome for Hannibal resident John David Hymers, known to many as David.  In February of 2017 David was returning home from an anniversary trip with his wife, Janna, when a gallbladder attack sent him to the emergency room.  David’s gallbladder attack also came with chest pains but the emergency room team quickly ruled out heart problems.  Once it was determined David didn’t have heart problems, he was then scheduled for further testing to discover the cause of his problem.

David met with gastroenterologist Dr. Almashhrawi who performed an endoscopy.  Through that endoscopy Dr. Almashhrawi made the discovery that David had esophageal cancer and referred him to Hannibal Regional’s Infusion Center for treatment.

Esophageal cancer often remains undetected until a late stage because it produces little to no symptoms and David will always be grateful for the care he received to help guide him to better.  The Hannibal Regional Infusion Center team made David and Janna feel comfortable and well-taken care of.  When talking about the Infusion Center team David and Janna say, “You all have been nothing but warm, caring, compassionate, attentive to our needs, helpful and loving!  We would recommend your services to others without any hesitation.”

The Hannibal Regional Infusion Center team is led by Dr. Kristen Strasser and is located in the Hannibal Regional Medical Building.  The Infusion Center offers patients an easy, attractive alternative to a hospital setting for receiving their cancer care and infusion therapy, simplifying and expediting the process while providing the highest-quality care and treatment.

David underwent several weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments and is now on the road to recovery.  “The Infusion Center team made our difficult time so much easier - we can’t thank them enough for all their support during our cancer journey!” share David and Janna.

Hannibal Regional Is First In The Area To Use Abbott’s BurstDR Stimulation To Help Patients Suffering Chronic Pain Bookmark

Hannibal, MO -- Luvell Glanton, Jr. M.D., at Hannibal Regional is the first physician in the Tri-State Area  to use BurstDR™ stimulation from Abbott to support the treatment of patients suffering from chronic pain. According to Dr. Glanton, BurstDR stimulation is a new, superior spinal cord stimulation option for patients and has been shown to provide less pain, less suffering and less therapy maintenance.

Amy Loscher was one of the first patients to receive the therapy.  She had suffered from chronic pain for many years following a failed neck surgery at another facility. After years of treating debilitating chronic pain with opioid pain medication, Amy was referred to Dr. Glanton at Hannibal Regional Medical Group. For years, Amy had attempted a variety of other pain therapy options with minimal pain relief but now is doing well.

BurstDR stimulation, which is exclusive to Abbott, is designed to help patients find relief from their pain and suffering while also providing a better experience with chronic pain therapy. With BurstDR stimulation, Abbott is also helping physicians address their patients’ physical and emotional responses to pain. BurstDR stimulation is also able to help physicians reduce paresthesia for their patients, which is a light tingling sensation sometimes experienced with traditional spinal cord stimulation.

According to Dr. Glanton, who is a Pain Management Specialist at Hannibal Regional, the ability of BurstDR stimulation to provide patients a more complete therapy experience is one of the key reasons he began offering the therapy to his patients.

“One of the many advantages of BurstDR include the intermittent ‘burst’ pulses that can reduce a patient’s pain level for longer than many other options available.” said Dr. Glanton.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapy can transform quality of life for many people who are otherwise unable to find relief from chronic pain. However, BurstDR stimulation has been clinically proven to improve upon traditional SCS by generating superior pain relief. Abbott’s proprietary BurstDR stimulation works differently from other stimulation designs, utilizing intermittent “burst” pulses designed to mimic the body’s natural nerve impulse patterns. The goal of the therapy is to empower physicians to provide patients a new therapy option to improve patient outcomes and help more patients secure relief from their chronic pain.

“Hannibal Regional Medical Group is privileged to have Dr. Glanton as part of our team. We believe his use of advanced technology/treatments, superior pain management skills and his passion to help are why so many patients choose Dr. Glanton. This new technology will improve patient care and allow many patients to get back to doing the things they want to do.” Said Kurt Ebers, Executive Director at Hannibal Regional Medical Group.

Chronic pain is a complex and challenging condition for physicians to manage, and a heavy burden for patients who find their lives profoundly limited by their pain. Many patients often move from treatment option to treatment option seeking pain relief, only to find a partial or incomplete response to therapy.

Hannibal Regional serves residents of the tri-state area from more than ten locations and includes Hannibal Regional Hospital, Hannibal Regional Medical Group, and Hannibal Regional Foundation. Hannibal Regional Hospital is a 99-bed, acute care hospital providing comprehensive health and wellness services. Hannibal Regional is recognized as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals™ for Coronary Intervention care and was also honored with the Healthgrades 2017 Joint Replacement Excellence Award™ placing Hannibal Regional among the top 10% in the nation for joint replacement procedures. Hannibal Regional is the only hospital in Missouri to receive both achievements 2 years in a row, 2016-2017. In addition, Hannibal Regional is recognized by Healthgrades with a 2016 Outstanding Patient Experience Award, putting them in the top 15% in the nation for this category.  Hannibal Regional Medical Group is a growing multi-specialty physician group delivering primary, specialty and express care services at multiple locations in northeast Missouri. Summer Health Tips: Kidney Stone Prevention Bookmark

Hannibal, MO -- Summer is a time for fun and relaxation for most, but can be a painful time for others. Doctors have seen sharp increases, sometimes a rise of as much as 30%, in patients who develop kidney stones, during the warm summer months.

The most common reason kidney stones develop is dehydration.  “As the temperature rises, we sweat more and without proper hydration, the body’s fluids become more concentrated with dietary minerals, such as calcium.” explains Dr. Cockrell, Urologist with Hannibal Regional Medical Group.  “This increases the risk that the minerals will concentrate into stones.”

It’s also important to know that even forming a stone just once increases your risk by 50% of forming additional kidney stones.  “The easiest way, particularly in the summer, to prevent kidney stones is to drink plenty of fluids,” shares Dr. Cockrell.  “An easy way to determine if you are drinking enough fluid is to pay attention to how often you are using the restroom.  If you aren’t using the restroom every couple of hours, you aren’t drinking enough.”

If you experience any symptoms of kidney stones - extreme, sharp pain in the back or side that will not go away, blood in the urine, nausea and vomiting, cloudy or odorous urine, frequent urination, a burning feeling when you urinate, fever and chills - you NEED to see a doctor. To diagnose kidney stones,  a doctor will do a physical exam and may perform additional tests - intravenous pyelogram (IVP), CT scan, urinalysis, blood test, and/or a renal ultrasound. Forms of treatment for kidney stones include shock waves, ureteroscopy, or watchful waiting for spontaneous kidney stone passage.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cockrell call 573-629-3500.
